The Future of AI in Officiating
Share
AI is not widely used to directly assist and replace human officiating in lacrosse or basketball during games, but there are developments in both sports where AI is being experimentally tested or used indirectly to support officiating or improve decision-making.
Here are potential ways that AI could be used in the sports of lacrosse and basketball:
Basketball:
Currently AI (video replay) is used for out of bounds, 3 point shots and certain foul situations.
Future AI could automatically review video footage and track player boundary and goaltending fouls without the need for human referees.
Lacrosse:
Currently AI video review can be used to assist officials in reviewing complex calls such as offside violations, penalties, ball possession or goals. The ability to analyze video allows officials to confirm or change their decision.
Future AI could help track player position and ball position to help in officiating. For example determining if a goal crossed the line or if a player was onside would be made easier using AI.
AI’s role in live officiating is still in the early stages, the technology is likely to grow, especially in video review, player tracking, and performance analytics. It could eventually provide valuable support for referees, enhancing accuracy and efficiency, but it's unlikely to fully replace human officials.
